It is extremely competitive to gain admission to BS/MD schools. Volunteer activities, as well as test scores, grades, and leadership ability are some of the contributing factors to a strong application.

Volunteering in the healthcare field will help your application for BS/MD programs. It will show the admissions team that you have a commitment to becoming a physician, and show that you have had some interaction with patients.

The following are places that can be pursued for a volunteer role. Some may be more difficult to obtain than others.

  • Assisted Care Facility
  • Clinics
  • Doctor’s Office •
  • Hospital
  • Nursing Home
  • Outpatient Clinic
  • Outpatient Surgery Center
  • Rehabilitation Center
  • Rural Health Clinic

The amount of time you volunteer has significance. Two or three years, rather than a few weeks or a few months will benefit the application. While you should have long-term volunteering in the healthcare field, you could also have some in another area as long as it shows that you have compassion and concern for others.

If your career goal is to be a physician and you are planning to apply to a BS/MD program, it’s important to start planning early in high school to create a strong profile, including a significant amount of volunteer experience in the healthcare field.
